One of the things I want to explore is the use of really good basic pieces. These are versatile basics of good quality that can be used in a multitude of ways. Changing the other items worn with the piece can easily change the look and feel of these great basics. I have many in my SL inventory that I wear again and again but they never get boring because they are so versatile.
Shown below is a basic black high-waisted knee length skirt from Kyoot called The Last Mobstress, with a beautifully done bottom ruffle that looks and moves as if it were pleated. The illusion is done with a combination of good texture detail and the unique shape of the skirt prims. You can raise or lower the prim and adjust its circumference to change the length of the skirt and the fit on your avatar. The drawn on belt is simple and can easily be covered by another wide prim belt if you prefer.
The first look shows a bustier that is the top from a dress I picked up as a gift at Talisman. The look is feminine but not fussy, with the top and the knotted pearls from EarthStones stealing the focus. The simple accessories are key here, accentuating the ease and grace of the outfit without being overdone. The soft up-do hair and neutral shoes complete the look.
I stuck with a bustier top for the next look as well, this one from one of my favorite designers, Digit Darkes. Notice how the cut of the top and the black trim across the top, higher and less rounded across the chest, makes the body look longer, and also accentuates the “push-up” look a garment of this type should provide. This gives a curvier, sexier look. The necklaces here are layered, and because they break up the expanse of skin across the top of the chest they serve to pull focus downward, again helping to create that longer line. The updo hair is messy and sexy, the black stilettos bold, all serving to create a look that says “not so nice” while preserving the femininity that the skirt inherently provides.
The devil, as they say, is in the details. Take a closer look at the bracelets from DeLa. Hard edges, solid materials, thick silver chains, all combined in a symmetrical pattern emphasizes the “not so nice” look I’m trying to achieve. In the original look, the accessories, while detailed, were softer. The ring from Donna Flora, for example, with its softer finish and gold tones, help to create a different feel. Both of these pieces show that investing in highly detailed, well made accessories pays dividends. These can be used and combined in a multitude of ways to help finish an outfit.
